International audienceConsidering that the effort of the speaker to guide the attention of the listener is a fundamental factor of the communication relation, this relation being itself at the basis of language, we put forward the hypothesis that the functions of different grammatical morphemes in French can be described in terms of "(de-)focalization". In this article, we show that the imperfective tense, as opposed to the present and the perfective tenses, serves to "de-focalize" the verbal expression in order to indicate that it is not directly pointing to the communicative aim, but is contributing to it indirectly. We show how this interpretation applies to the "modal" uses of the French imperfective tense, and how it can be generalized...
